Unfolded

Explores the intimacies of family and the fragility of memory.  I aim to use photography as a medium that examines the relationship between what is visible and non-visible. My works are created using only traditional processes of both photography and collage. I begin by printing a collection of vintage photographs, retrieved from a variety of sources onto transparent film. Then, to add subtle nuances and meaning to the image, I arrange pieces of ephemera, old photographs, documents and personal mementos between plexiglass layers, giving the piece a figurative and literal depth. I see the layering of paper and photographic imagery as being similar to the way our minds organize memory, at different depths, one over another, constantly shifting. Each assemblage is a unique, hand-built, three-dimensional construction that conveys a simple impression, but also opens up a range of deeper interpretations, stories, and meanings that become apparent when you look carefully into them and through them.
